UK sets aside $270 million to get ready for a potential deployment to Ukraine
Britain announced it would allocate 200 million pounds ($270 million) to support preparations for the potential deployment of troops to Ukraine, following its commitment this week to contribute soldiers to a multinational force for the country in the event of a ceasefire.
On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reached a declaration of intent during a summit of the “coalition of the willing” among Ukraine’s allies, detailing a possible future deployment.
During his visit to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Friday, British defence minister John Healey announced that the funds would be allocated for enhancing vehicles and communication systems, implementing counter-drone measures, and ensuring that troops are prepared for deployment.
Britain announced its decision shortly after Russia launched a powerful hypersonic missile, which Kyiv’s European allies characterized as an effort to deter them from backing Ukraine.
Macron has indicated that France might deploy thousands of troops to the Multinational Force for Ukraine (MNFU), with the goal of strengthening security guarantees to reassure Kyiv. Britain has not disclosed the number of troops it would contribute; Starmer mentioned on Wednesday that Britain’s plans are still being finalized.
Healey stated that the funding announcement for the MNFU demonstrated the government’s commitment to “surging investment” in preparations for Ukraine.
“This capital spending is being funded from the core defence budget and sends a clear signal to allies and adversaries of the UK’s intent to lead the MNFU and fulfil our promises to secure peace in Ukraine,” the statement from the Ministry of Defence stated.
Healey informed Zelenskiy that the production of Octopus interceptor drones, which are based on a Ukrainian design but manufactured in Britain, is set to commence in January. Britain will return thousands of them to Ukraine each month to assist the nation in defending itself against Russian drone assaults.
