Carrick and Solskjaer are in the lead for the position of Manchester United’s interim manager
Fletcher is the interim manager while former players Carrick and Solskjaer are considered for the position till the end of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick, two former players, are being considered by Manchester United as potential temporary managers till the end of the current campaign.
Both individuals are scheduled to meet with the club’s leadership in person. Carrick served as interim manager for a limited period of time. Given that Carrick was an important member of Solskjaer’s coaching staff when he took Jose Mourinho’s place at Old Trafford in 2018, it is still plausible that the two might share the position.
Until a caretaker is chosen, United’s current under-18s coach, Darren Fletcher, who has also been contacted about the position, will serve as interim manager. Fletcher will continue to manage Sunday’s FA Cup match against Brighton after overseeing his debut game on Wednesday, a 2-2 draw at Burnley in the Premier League.
Gary Neville, a former United captain and pundit, claimed that the club was taking a well-known route in selecting a former player. He said to Sky Sports: “It’s almost like a cycle, like Groundhog Day and a movie we’ve all watched before. I do believe that Ole has a deep affection for the club and is well-versed in the role because he has worked there.
Other names that have been considered are Ruud van Nistelrooy and Michael Carrick, both of whom are truly amazing individuals. For several years, I trained with them guys. They have a deep passion for the club and understand it, but if the results don’t go their way, they will be under a lot of pressure over the next four or five months, and they must be prepared for that. I wish the best for whoever will succeed out of the three individuals named, as it is a challenging task.
It is also believed that former United striker Van Nistelrooy is a candidate.
After a tumultuous 14 months in charge, Amorim was fired on Monday, and United plans to appoint a permanent replacement in the summer. If the next two games go well, one player informed BBC Sport, Fletcher might be able to continue in the post until the end of the season, or the caretaker role might be shared.
After taking over in a similar caretaker role in 2018, Solskjaer advanced to full-time manager for three years before being fired in November 2021. Following Solskjaer’s departure, Carrick served as interim manager for three games before departing the team in December 2021.
Compared to Carrick, Solskjaer has managed more games—more than 332—in his career. Following his playing retirement, he played for Cardiff City and Besiktas and guided Molde to two Norwegian crowns. Even though Besiktas fired him after 29 games, he still has a 53.1% career win percentage.
Carrick has only held one permanent position at Middlesbrough, therefore his managerial experience is very restricted. He became a member of United’s coaching staff at the conclusion of the 2017–18 campaign, and after Solskjaer left, he briefly held the position of temporary manager. After leading Middlesbrough to a play-off place in 2022–2023—but just missing top-six finishes, he was fired in June of last year. His winning percentage as a manager is 46.8%.
Oliver Glasner, the manager of Crystal Palace, and Roberto de Zerbi, the former manager of Brighton who is currently at Marseille, are early candidates for the permanent managerial position. “I am Crystal Palace manager and it makes no sense for you to ask me any more questions about it,” said Glasner, declining to comment.
