Russian general killed in Moscow car bomb as investigators explore potential Ukrainian connection
A senior general was killed in a car explosion in Moscow, according to Russian authorities, while investigators look into potential Ukrainian involvement.
According to authorities, a top Russian military commander was murdered in a Moscow explosion Monday. This is the most recent high-profile strike on military leaders since the invasion of Ukraine.
Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed in the Russian capital after an explosive device placed beneath a car exploded, according to the country’s Investigative Committee. The committee stated that Sarvarov was in charge of the operational training division of the armed forces.
The alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence agencies was one of several potential motives that investigators said they were looking into. Regarding the incident, Ukraine has not responded.
According to local media, the location was a parking lot close to an apartment complex in the southern region of Moscow. Russian officials announced that investigative teams had been sent there.
Since Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, there has been an increasing number of attacks on key Russian military leaders in the city, including this one.
In April, a vehicle bomb in Moscow killed General Yaroslav Moskalik. Another top commander, General Igor Kirillov, perished in December 2024 following the remote detonation of an explosive device hidden in a scooter.
Although the accusation was never formally verified, a Ukrainian source subsequently claimed that Kirillov was slain by the country’s security agency. As a matter of policy, targeted attacks are not publicly acknowledged or attributed to Ukrainian officials.
