South Africa Launches a Manhunt After Nine People Are Killed in a Tavern Shooting Near Johannesburg
South African police are actively pursuing gunmen following an attack on a tavern that resulted in nine fatalities and ten injuries.
South African police have initiated a manhunt following a tragic shooting at a licensed tavern in a township close to Johannesburg, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals and injuring at least 10 others.
The event took place in Bekkersdal during the early hours of Sunday, around 01:00 local time. Authorities reported that around 12 unidentified gunmen approached the tavern in two vehicles, unleashed gunfire on patrons, and continued to shoot indiscriminately while escaping the scene.
Officials have verified that the assailants fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement, and inquiries are currently underway to determine the reason for the assault. As of now, there have been no arrests, and law enforcement is urging anyone with information to step forward.
The recent shooting heightens worries about violent crime in South Africa, a country that ranks among the highest in murder rates worldwide. As per data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for 2023–2024, the nation reports approximately 45 murders for every 100,000 individuals.
The Bekkersdal attack occurs only weeks following another mass shooting near Pretoria, which resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, including a child, at a hostel.
Authorities have increased patrols in the area as investigations progress, while community leaders have reiterated their demands for more robust actions to address gun violence and enhance public safety.
