Ed Sheeran Talks About Giving Up Beer After Becoming a Father

Ed Sheeran wanted to be “a responsible dad,” so he gave up his “beer-guzzling” lifestyle after becoming a father.

The 34-year-old pop star embraced a healthy new lifestyle and began exercising to help him with his new role as a father. He became a father for the first time in 2020 when he and his wife, Cherry Seaborn, welcomed a daughter named Lyra, and they became parents again in 2022 when they welcomed another little girl named Jupiter.

In an interview with Men’s Health UK magazine, he said, “[Fitness] just sort of became something that really added to my life.” As a thirtysomething father, I believe that at my core, I am a pizza-eating, beer-guzzling smoker, but that is simply not my reality. I believe that you must make wise choices.

“Working up to that, it just makes you feel better. I’d never run more than a kilometer, and I completed my first 10K during COVID — stuff like that.” And I believe I am in my thirties. I’m not saying I’m done having fun—I still drink. Red wine and a good lunch are something I enjoy, but not every day.

Fatherhood altered his outlook on exercise and health, he continued, adding: “I became a dad.” I invited my best friend over and we shared a bottle of wine when Lyra was two weeks old.

After I had gone to bed, Lyra woke up twenty minutes early. “F***, I probably shouldn’t drink if I’m going to feel this dreadful,” I thought when I woke up.

“I wish I could perform the nighttime activities. It all came at the same time that I wanted to feel and look beautiful and be a responsible father.

“I didn’t want to pick up my child with my back f***** and all that. Additionally, that contributes to one’s career.I wanted to have a superhuman stage presence.

Ed said that he had a “pretty unhealthy life” in his twenties. After witnessing rapper Stormzy perform press-ups backstage prior to a gig, he was motivated to make a change.

He told the magazine: “I would say that between the ages of 20 and 30, I led a really unhealthy life. Furthermore, even though I was succeeding professionally, I wouldn’t say that this translated well into my personal life.

Furthermore, healthiness, in my opinion, is a clear indicator of one’s mental health and emotional state. Every morning, I would wake up, glance in the mirror, and feel disgusted with myself.

“It was undoubtedly a motivator when I consider someone like Stormzy and the training he undergoes before going on tour.

“When I went to see him perform in 2021, he was performing a hundred press-ups before taking the stage, and I was looking at him like, ‘What the f*** is this about?’

Men’s Health UK’s January/February issue, which goes on sale on December 23, or the MH website today, has the entire interview with Ed Sheeran.
