Argentina-Spain Finalissima Arranges Messi-Yamal’s First-Ever Showdown
Argentina, the world champions, will play Spain, the European champions, in the March Finalissima at Lusail. This will be Messi and Yamal’s first competitive encounter.
On March 27, Spain and Argentina will square off in the Finalissima, a high-profile match that will match Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi against Barcelona great Lamine Yamal for the first time.
The champions of Europe and South America will square off in the match at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, where Argentina won the 2022 World Cup.
Although the Finalissima will be held four times, this will just be the second time the trophy has been contested this century.
Argentina won the trophy at Wembley in 2022 after defeating Italy 3-0. In 1985, France defeated Uruguay to win the competition’s first edition, which was then called the Artemio Franchi Cup. Argentina won the trophy once more in 1993 after defeating Denmark in a penalty shootout.
In the forthcoming game, Yamal will play Messi for the first time in a competitive match. Playing on the right flank, being left-footed, and wearing the No. 10 shirt are all characteristics that the 18-year-old and the 38-year-old have in common, as have their similar development paths at Barcelona.
Yamal has denied the comparisons, stating that he is more concerned with establishing his own career.
Yamal stated last month, “I respect him, in the end, for what he’s been, for what he is to football, and if we ever meet on a pitch, there will be that mutual respect because we are players and because, in my opinion, he is the best in history.”
He is aware that I am a player and that I value him, therefore there is reciprocal respect. Messi is aware of my desire to not be him, and we both know that I do not wish to be him. I just want to pursue my own path.
This is their first encounter on the pitch, but they had met before. In 2007, Messi and Yamal appeared together for a charity calendar. The pictures then surfaced and went viral during Euro 2024, when Spain won the European Championship.
