Paul confronts Joshua, putting fame and followers front and center
Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua will conclude another year of significant changes in boxing this Friday night in Miami, showcasing a mismatch that highlights the evolution of the sport, where online fame has become nearly as crucial as punching power.
YouTuber-turned-pugilist Paul, moving up from cruiserweight, faces the former heavyweight champion aiming to enhance his reputation against the 36-year-old Briton, who was knocked down four times in his latest fight, an IBF heavyweight title bout with Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
“You see, it’s all about boxing, the skill of boxing, and maintaining distance in the ring.” He will undoubtedly step up, take the initiative, and demonstrate maturity. “And it’s all about being smooth, float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” Paul said, channeling former boxing great Muhammad Ali.
Although Ali participated in some unconventional yet profitable ventures during his career, including a mixed-rules match against professional wrestler Antonio Inoki in 1976, he would scarcely recognize the current landscape of boxing, despite the fact that financial gain remains the primary driving force.
Joshua, whose career took a concerning downturn after losing his four heavyweight belts to Andy Ruiz in a surprising upset in 2019, has been offered a notable $50 million along with bonuses for the fight, which will be available on the streaming platform Netflix.
The Netflix audience comprises dedicated boxing enthusiasts keen to witness Joshua’s remaining prowess, alongside younger fans of Paul, with the former anticipating a decisive victory for Joshua.
“I’ve heard individuals mention, ‘Oh, I’m not particularly interested in boxing, but I’m tuning in for this fight,'” Joshua stated during a press conference on Wednesday. “However, no one is actually approaching me to say anything regarding Jake, nor are they asking me to take him out.” Only good energy.
UNUSUAL CONFRONTATION
Utilizing his notoriety, Paul’s journey in boxing has led him to face off against former basketball player Nate Robinson and retired MMA fighters Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva, along with an unusual bout against a 57-year-old Mike Tyson.
Swedish heavyweight Otto Wallin, who retired on his stool during his bout with Joshua in Riyadh two years ago, informed Reuters that Joshua has the kind of power that could potentially put Paul in serious danger during the fight.
“When you’re in that ring, it’s a perilous environment, and anything can occur,” Joshua remarked with a foreboding tone. “You wish for your opponent to exit the ring unharmed, yet if that doesn’t happen, you understand that you must rest easy, aware that you’ve fulfilled your duty.”
In spite of the overwhelming evidence against it, Paul continues to hold the belief that he is on par with a boxer who is vastly superior to him in both reputation and skill.
“I think he (Joshua) is fully focused and understands that this could very well be the most significant loss of his career, and he has a lot at stake in this fight,” Paul stated.
