India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Addis Ababa for a bilateral visit, highlighting the importance of enhanced cooperation with Ethiopia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated India’s dedication to strengthening ties with Ethiopia upon his arrival in Addis Ababa for a bilateral visit characterized by significant engagements and key cooperation agreements.
On Tuesday, Modi shared a post on X expressing his honor at being personally welcomed at the airport by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, highlighting Ethiopia as a nation with “great history and vibrant culture.” He observed that India and Ethiopia possess profound civilizational connections and conveyed hope for enhancing collaboration across various sectors.
“I am grateful to Ethiopia for an unforgettable welcome.” Modi expressed that the Indian community demonstrated exceptional warmth and affection, noting that the friendship between India and Ethiopia would grow “even more robust in the times to come.”
A statement from Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted the key outcomes of the visit. The outcomes included: ·The elevation of bilateral ties to a ‘Strategic Partnership’.
·Cooperation and mutual administrative assistance agreement in customs matters.
·Agreement for the establishment of a data centre at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
Implementing an arrangement for collaboration in training for United Nations peacekeeping operations.
·Execution of the Memorandum of Understanding regarding debt restructuring for Ethiopia within the G20 Common Framework.
·Increase in the number of scholarships for Ethiopian scholars through the ICCR scholarship programme.
Specialized short-term courses in Artificial Intelligence for Ethiopian students and professionals under the ITEC programme.
India will assist in enhancing the capacity of the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Addis Ababa, focusing on maternal healthcare and neonatal care.
The visit was notably marked by the awarding of Ethiopia’s highest civilian honor, the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’, to Prime Minister Modi. On Wednesday, Modi conveyed his appreciation to the Ethiopian government and its people, stating that the recognition was a source of great pride.
“Receiving recognition from one of the world’s most ancient and rich civilisations is a source of great pride. “This honor is dedicated to the numerous Indians who have contributed to and fortified our partnership throughout the years,” he stated.
India reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with Ethiopia in tackling emerging global challenges and fostering new avenues for mutual growth, as both nations aim to build on the results of the significant visit.
