Nigeria Awaits FIFA’s Decision While DR Congo Is Investigated for Player Eligibility

Nigeria’s prospects of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup remain alive as FIFA looks into possible ineligible players in the DR Congo squad.

As world football’s governing body continues to examine the eligibility of players deployed by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) during the African playoffs for the 2026 tournament, Nigeria’s hopes of making a comeback to the FIFA World Cup remain intact.

In the pivotal playoff for Africa’s intercontinental qualifying slot, DR Congo eliminated the Super Eagles on penalties. However, due to claims that DR Congo may have violated FIFA eligibility rules, that outcome is currently being looked into.

According to reports, the investigation centers on allegations that about nine DR Congo players changed their nationalities without fulfilling all the formalities and administrative requirements set forth by FIFA regulations and Congolese law. Since dual citizenship is not often recognized in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, those who obtain a second nationality are expected to publicly renounce their first one. This condition is crucial for players who have already reached the legal age restriction for choosing a nationality.

According to FIFA regulations, having a passport does not guarantee that a player can play for their country. Additionally, players must abide by FIFA rules on changes of international allegiance as well as domestic legal requirements. According to reports, some of these requirements might not have been met in full, and there have also been questions raised over the documentation of at least one player who had previously turned down an international call-up.

FIFA is reportedly looking into the situation carefully, and its ruling is anticipated to establish whether there were any infractions and what penalties, if any, will be imposed. Depending on the seriousness of any verified violations, the consequences vary from match forfeiture to more extensive disciplinary actions.

The probe has raised further questions about DR Congo’s World Cup qualification status, even though outright expulsion would be regarded as a harsh punishment. Nigeria, however, is still waiting for FIFA’s final decision.
