Seventeen individuals lost their lives and 20 sustained injuries when a bus transporting graduating students fell off a cliff in northern Colombia.
Local authorities confirmed on Sunday night that at least 17 people lost their lives and 20 others were injured when a bus transporting schoolchildren fell off a cliff in a rural region of northern Colombia.
The governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián, stated that the bus was on its way back to Medellín from the Caribbean town of Tolú after a school trip. The vehicle was carrying students from Antioqueño High School who had been celebrating their graduation at the beach.
The circumstances leading to the crash remain uncertain at this time; however, emergency services have been dispatched to the isolated location to aid survivors and retrieve victims. Injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention, with several reported to be in critical condition.
Governor Julián described the tragedy as devastating, noting that the incident had cast a dark shadow over the community, especially during the festive month of December.
“This news is incredibly difficult for the whole community at this moment,” he stated.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the accident as the nation grieves the tragic loss of young lives, which were abruptly ended during what was intended to be a joyful journey.
