US lawmaker has introduced a bill that calls for the US to leave NATO

Thomas Massie, a Republican representative from Kentucky, has proposed a bill to withdraw the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Thomas Massie, a Republican representative from Kentucky, has declared that he has introduced a bill to withdraw the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He claims that the alliance is out of date, has cost American taxpayers money, and puts the country at risk of getting involved in international conflicts.

NATO is a holdover from the Cold War. The money should be used to defend our nation, not socialist nations, if the US were to leave NATO. In an X post, Massie stated, “Today, I introduced HR 6508 to end our NATO membership.”

Massie’s post was reposted by GOP Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, who added, “Co-sponsoring this.”

In order to combat the Soviet Union, which fell more than 30 years ago, NATO was established. Since then, American engagement has cost taxpayers trillions of dollars and still puts the country at risk of getting involved in international conflicts.

Our Founding Fathers specifically cautioned us against persistent foreign entanglements, which our Constitution did not permit. A news release quotes Massie as saying, “America shouldn’t be the world’s security blanket—especially when wealthy countries refuse to pay for their own defense.”

Earlier this year, Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah filed the “Not a Trusted Organization Act,” or “NATO Act,” in the Senate. According to Fox News, Massie is currently pursuing identical legislation in the House.

“Any Party may cease to be a Party one year after its notice of denunciation has been given to the Government of the United States of America, which will inform the Governments of the other Parties of the deposit of each notice of denunciation,” according to Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty, the report stated. This provision applies after the Treaty has been in effect for 20 years.

This escape route would be used in Lee and Massie’s proposal to pull the United States out of the long-standing NATO alliance.

“The President shall give notice of denunciation of the North Atlantic Treaty for purposes of withdrawing the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in accordance with Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty, done at Washington April 4, 1949, not later than 30 days after the date of the enactment of this Act,” the proposal stated.

The measure stated that “no funds authorised to be appropriated, appropriated, or otherwise made available by any Act may be used to fund, directly or indirectly, United States contributions to the common-funded budgets of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, including the civil budget, the military budget, or the Security Investment Programme.”
