Heavy Layoffs Affect the U.S. More than 1.2 million jobs are in jeopardy
Millions of Jobs Will Be Removed as Cuts Increase
A significant change in the job market is indicated by the fact that layoff announcements in the US have increased to their greatest level since the epidemic era.
Employers have announced plans to eliminate about 1.2 million positions until the end of November, according to new statistics from Challenger, Gray, and Christmas. As a result, 2025 will only be the sixth year since 1993 that job reduction announcements have surpassed 1.1 million.
There were 71,321 proposed cuts in November alone, more than in the same month the previous year and the highest number since 2022.
Among the industries most impacted were telecommunications, food, and technology corporations. In November, Verizon announced plans to cut 13,000 jobs, making it stand apart.
Due to the recent government shutdown, which caused a hiatus in official federal job data, these numbers are much more significant.
The Challenger numbers are now among the few measures demonstrating how sharply the labor market has tightened this year because to the scarcity of data.
