What Actually Occurred in the Ordinary Hotel Elevator Between Jay-Z and Solange

New Information Illustrates How Rachel Roy’s Dress, Misunderstandings, and Compliments Powered the Iconic Argument

The truth of Jay-Z and Solange Knowles’ epic altercation is finally becoming more apparent, years after the elevator footage went viral and rocked the internet.

Oscar G. Lopez, the fashion designer who created Rachel Roy’s 2014 Met Gala dress, is sharing his thoughts on the evening that transformed a quiet hotel elevator into a topic of conversation across the world.

Lopez claims that a seemingly harmless praise was the cause of the incident.

He told the Daily Mail, “I believe Jay-Z complimented [Roy] about the gown, and Beyoncé’s sister felt that it was not proper, so there was a kind of drama there.” Roy’s black lace dress was not the center of attention until the elevator fight made headlines because she had come late to the gala and missed the red carpet completely.

Page Six previously said that Solange, who was allegedly drunk, had argued with Roy when they first arrived at the hotel, however it is unclear what exactly caused the dispute. Lopez chuckled as he recalled the media craze.

“The dress made headlines everywhere.” It was hilarious. Good press is any press. He emphasized Roy’s long-standing work relationship with Jay-Z by calling her a “sweetheart” and calling persistent claims of an affair “silly.”

To put things in perspective, Roy had previously worked as an intern at Rocawear, the fashion brand that Jay-Z and Damon Dash co-founded, before becoming the creative director of the women’s and toddler collections.

Although there has been much conjecture among music fans regarding Jay-Z’s previous affairs, Lopez emphasizes that Roy’s profession and personality do not lend credence to these theories.

The whispers of an affair have, of course, never completely subsided. In her 2016 hit song Sorry, Beyoncé publicly alluded to her husband’s adultery, creating the iconic line “Becky with the good hair.”

The playful Instagram caption, “Good hair don’t care,” that Roy later shared was “misunderstood,” according to her. The next year, Jay-Z joined in with Family Feud, declaring that he had cheated on “Becky” and pleading with her to “leave [him] alone.”

In the meantime, Lopez remembers the actual fight. After the Boom Boom Room afterparty, surveillance film captures Solange kicking, swinging, and lunging at Jay-Z in the elevator.

Even though the video was only shot for a few seconds, it immediately became a cultural icon, connecting Roy’s black lace dress to one of the most talked-about celebrity altercations in recent history.

Family reconciliation occurred quickly despite the incident going viral. Later, in a joint statement, Jay-Z and Solange acknowledged that they had “apologized to each other” and moved ahead as a single family.

Even now, the elevator battle serves as a warning about how one compliment, a tardy arrival, and possibly one too many drinks can cause a media frenzy, particularly when “Becky with the good hair” is involved.
