Daily Mail Owner DMGT Consents to Purchase for $650 Million The Telegraph
DMGT, the owner of Daily Mail, has finalized a $650 million acquisition of The Telegraph, creating one of the largest right-leaning media groups in Britain.
DMGT, the owner of the Daily Mail, announced over the weekend that it has finalized a £500 million, or $650 million, agreement to acquire its rival newspaper, The Telegraph. This merger will establish one of the most influential right-leaning media groups in Britain.
A week after U.S.-based private investment firm RedBird Capital Partners retracted its bid for The Telegraph, one of Britain’s largest newspapers, a report from Reuters indicated.
In 2023, a joint venture between RedBird and IMI acquired the Telegraph Media Group and The Spectator magazine, but the government intervened to prohibit foreign state investment in UK newspapers.
RedBird subsequently sought government approval to move forward with the acquisition under a modified structure, with Abu Dhabi-backed IMI involved as a minority investor limited to 15 percent, according to the report.
A source familiar with RedBird informed Reuters that the regulatory clearance process has been more protracted than anticipated, leading to uncertainties regarding the timeline and viability of the acquisition. Ongoing internal resistance from prominent members of the Telegraph newsroom led to its decision to withdraw.
The Financial Times, which initially reported on the DMGT deal, indicated that the price was established at approximately 500 million pounds to reimburse the funds utilized by the RedBird-led consortium.
According to a statement from DMGT, the parties have commenced a phase of exclusivity to finalize the transaction terms and prepare the required regulatory submissions, which they anticipate will occur promptly. The transaction will adhere to the UK’s Foreign State Influence regime, as there will be no foreign state investment or capital involved in the funding structure, the statement noted.
In 2023, DMGT expressed interest in possibly submitting a bid for The Telegraph Media Group. In May of this year, Sky News reported that DMGT was engaged in discussions to acquire a 9.9 percent stake in the Telegraph titles.
DMGT’s collection of media brands features The Mail on Sunday, Metro, The i Paper, and New Scientist. The Daily Telegraph will maintain its editorial independence from other publications within the group.
A representative from RedBird IMI stated: “DMGT and RedBird IMI have acted promptly to finalize the agreement announced today, which will soon be presented to the Secretary of State.” The Telegraph has not yet provided a response to Reuters’ request for comment.
