Walmart launches its first store in Africa in South Africa
Walmart (WMT.N) opened its first store in South Africa on Saturday, marking the U.S. retail giant’s debut on the African continent as it aims to establish a presence in a competitive market.
Over a hundred shoppers lined up for hours outside the store to seize Walmart’s “Everyday Low Prices” and explore international products that are hard to find in South Africa, including designer counter-top air fryers by Drew Barrymore, Labubu dolls, and Dr. Pepper sodas.
“I’m actually here for a specific product that isn’t readily available in South Africa….it’s a children’s toy, Labubu,” Refilwe Mabale informed Reuters.
Individuals such as Tshepo Rambau were eager to take advantage of deals during the Black Friday weekend. The 44-year-old mentioned to Reuters, while waiting in line, that he was interested in tech products such as WIFI extenders.
“I’m hoping to find them at a lower price here,” he remarked.
The retailer will additionally provide a sixty-minute online delivery service. This positions it in direct competition with Checkers’ Sixty60 on-demand delivery service, which is operated by South Africa’s largest grocery retailer, Shoprite (SHPJ.J), opens new tab.
“The launch of the inaugural Walmart store in South Africa signifies more than just a business achievement; it represents a dedication to assisting customers in saving money and enhancing their lives by reliably providing the lowest overall cost for the essential products they require,” stated Andrea Albright, executive vice president of Walmart.
The store, situated in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, has generated 80 new jobs and has partnered with 15 local small- and medium-sized enterprises, according to the retailer.
