“Heartbroken” Alcaraz withdraws from the Davis Cup finals because of an injury
Carlos Alcaraz, the number one seed in the world, announced on Tuesday that he was “heartbroken” to miss the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna because of a swollen hamstring.
The Spaniard made matters worse at the ATP Finals, losing to Jannik Sinner in the championship match on Sunday. The International Tennis Federation, the tournament’s organizers, suffered even another setback as a result of the Spaniard’s withdrawal.
Alcaraz posted on Instagram, “I’m very sorry to inform you that I will not be able to play for Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna.”
“The doctor has advised me not to compete because of edema in my right hamstring.
“I’ve always maintained that the best thing in the world is to play for Spain, and I was eager to support our Davis Cup campaign. I’m devastated and heading home.”
The world number two, Sinner, withdrew from the competition last month before Italy, the reigning champions, confirmed his withdrawal.
Lorenzo Musetti, who withdrew for family and health reasons, will also be absent for Italy, the winners of the last two Davis Cups.
Lorenzo Sonego, who has been practicing in Turin lately, is anticipated to take Musetti’s place.
Spain will play the Czech Republic on Thursday in the quarterfinals, with the final on Sunday, while Italy will play Austria on Wednesday.
