Russian billionaire Abramovich claims the Jersey probe is illegal and without merit

The spokesperson for Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich claimed on Sunday that he had been permitted to present “claims of conspiracy” against the government and that a criminal inquiry that the Jersey authorities had started against him in 2022 was without merit.

The Attorney General of Jersey stated that Abramovich was a suspect in a criminal inquiry, and the Royal Court of Jersey implemented a formal freezing order in April 2022 on $7 billion worth of assets in trusts that Jersey claimed were connected to Abramovich.

“No charges have been brought against Mr Abramovich in the 3.5 years since the investigation was commenced, and, to our knowledge, in fact no progress has been made on this case,” his spokesman stated.

“Mr Abramovich was allowed earlier this year to introduce claims of Conspiracy against the Government of Jersey,” the spokeswoman stated.

An inquiry on the statement was not immediately answered by Jersey.

According to Abramovich’s spokeswoman, the conspiracy allegation was based on the Jersey government’s admission that it had erased case-related material and its general failure to reveal information about Abramovich.

After the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991, Abramovich, who is also an Israeli citizen, became one of the most influential businessmen and amassed enormous sums. According to Forbes, he has a $9.2 billion net worth.
