India detains a Kashmiri citizen for a car explosion in Delhi
A Kashmiri citizen was detained by India’s federal anti-terror agency on Sunday on suspicion of plotting with the driver of a car that detonated in Delhi last week, killing eight people and injuring at least twenty more.
The car used in the attack was registered in Amir Rashid Ali’s name, and the National Investigation Agency announced that it had apprehended him in Delhi. It named the alleged suicide bomber as Umar Un Nabi, a native of the Pulwama area in south Kashmir, and charged Ali with plotting with him.
According to the report, Ali traveled to Delhi in order to help buy the car, which was used as a “vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Device to trigger the blast.”
The authorities claimed to have taken another Nabi car into custody for inspection. 73 witnesses, including those hurt in the explosion, have been questioned thus far.
The Indian government declared last week that it was considering the automobile explosion a “terror incident” and promised to prosecute those responsible as soon as possible.
In the highly guarded city of Delhi, the explosion near the ancient Red Fort was the first of its kind since 2011.
