Robert Mugabe Jnr Convicted of Illegal Drug Possession in Harare Court
Robert Mugabe Jr. was found guilty of possessing illegal drugs in Harare; his sentence will either include a jail sentence or a fine.
A magistrate in Harare has convicted Robert Mugabe Jr., the 33-year-old son of the late president of Zimbabwe, Robert Gabriel Mugabe, of illicit narcotics possession.
Following Mugabe Jr.’s appearance in court on Thursday, Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki delivered the decision. He begged for clemency during the proceedings, explaining to the court that he is a single father of two small children. Later this afternoon, his sentencing is anticipated.
The decision comes after a week of courtroom drama following Mugabe Jr.’s nonattendance at his original hearing. When he failed to show up for the trial, a warrant of arrest was issued, and before Magistrate Mutendereki approved it, court authorities had to call his name three times outside the courthouse.
The Dangerous Drugs Act of Zimbabwe, which forbids the use or possession of controlled substances without the required authorization, was the basis for his charges. The kind and amount of drugs that were discovered in his possession have not been made public by the authorities.
Mugabe Jr.’s attorney asked the court to take into account his cooperation with the authorities and his obligations to his family as mitigating factors. However, prosecutors contended that the court needs to make it clear that no one is above the law, regardless of their standing.
The Mugabe family, formerly Zimbabwe’s most dominant political dynasty, has suffered a rare judicial setback as a result of the verdict. Mugabe Jr. has mostly shunned politics in favor of business and social endeavors, even though his late father dominated the nation for almost 40 years.
His sentence—which is being keenly monitored for its possible influence on how Zimbabwean courts handle high-profile drug-related offenses—will decide whether he receives a fine or a prison term.
