Nigeria defeats Gabon 4-1 AET in the WCQ to advance to the Africa Playoffs Final
Nigeria defeated Gabon 4-1 following a thrilling match in Rabat, thanks to two goals from Victor Osimhen in extra time.
After a fierce battle in extra time, Nigeria defeated Gabon 4-1. Victor Osimhen scored twice to give the Super Eagles the thrilling victory in Rabat.
Ademola Lookman and Bright Osayi-Samuel gave the Super Eagles multiple chances as they dominated the first half. In the 23rd minute, Osimhen missed a close-range shot.
The first half ended goalless despite Nigeria’s constant pressure, as VAR also overturned a handball appeal against a Gabon defender. Despite late threats from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Openda in the first half, the Super Eagles’ defense held firm.
Gabon had a better start to the second half and came close to winning after a lengthy VAR review for a possible penalty, but the referee ultimately only gave them a corner. In response, Nigeria brought in Moses Simon and Chidera Ejuke, both of whom gave the offensive new life.
When Appindangoye made a defensive gaffe in the 78th minute, Akor Adams took advantage of it to slot home and give Nigeria a well-earned 1-0 lead. But in the 89th minute, Mario Lemina’s deflected goal tied the game, forcing extra time after 12 minutes of stoppage time. Gabon responded late.
Nigeria regained their rhythm in extra time. Wilfred Ndidi provided a deft assist, and Ejuke’s accurate finish in the 97th minute gave them the lead again. Osimhen’s spectacular angled goal moments later set the score at 3-1, and he completed his brace with another calm finish in the 110th minute to ensure the victory.
The Napoli forward received a booking for taking off his shirt in celebration, but his heroics in the closing moments made sure that Nigeria won handily and that Gabon was unable to rally.
On Sunday, the Super Eagles will face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the championship match.
