Akon Has a Short Legal Run-In Amid Divorce Drama
Akon is said to have been taken into custody.
Law enforcement officers apprehended the “Locked Up” hitmaker due to a suspended license. The artist was not put in jail as a result, but his official mugshot is now in the system.
Since he is involved in a complex divorce case because of his polygamous family, Akon is no stranger to legal troubles. His record in the sector was tarnished by a business partner’s numerous problems over his career.
Akon’s suspended license resulted in a booking.
In Georgia, the singer was arrested last Thursday. Because his license was suspended, he was booked in DeKalb County. Roswell issued a warrant in Fulton County, Georgia, which led to his arrest. This was verified to be an out-of-county warrant.
A police officer discovered the musician’s Tesla Cybertruck was stranded with a dead battery on September 10 and filed the warrant. When the officer discovered that Akon had a suspended license for not showing up for court, back in January 2023, he then issued a citation for Akon.
They were waiting for the tow truck to come when the police observed this. After being arrested, Akon was held for a period of time before being freed six hours later. According to Photos by Page Six, he was wearing a black sweatshirt when his mugshot was taken.
The singer made headlines after going through a difficult divorce.
Akon publicly practiced polygamy by fathering nine children from multiple women. The musician Amirror openly claimed to be one of his four wives, although other women also make claims to be his wives.
His long-term wife, Homeland Thiam, filed for divorce, claiming irreconcilable differences, after over thirty years of marriage. Four days before what should have been their 29th anniversary, the momentous move was made.
The submitted documents showed that the couple has a daughter, Journey, who is 17 years old, but they did not specify the exact date of their separation. Thiam wants full physical custody but joint legal custody because she is not legally an adult. She also requested that Akon be allowed to visit their daughter and receive spousal support.
Since polygamy is illegal in the United States, The Blast said that because of his unusual marriage lifestyle, dividing his assets could make the divorce more complicated.
According to the musician, polygamy is normal for him.
Akon is an artist from Senegal whose real name is Alioune Badara Thiam. He has publicly supported polygamy because it is legal in his native nation.
He asserts that he views polygamy as normal and that it is a part of his culture. Being monogamous was literally against nature, he said, and living in the West does not mean that he would abandon his African customs.
He acknowledged that he is a responsible father to nine children. He has an obligation to his family to provide them with food and shelter. He views all other activities, such as recitals and holidays, as “extra stuff” and would only participate if he had the time.
Akon was brought up and shaped by his mother.
Tomeka Thiam, his mother, raised the well-known singer, and her upbringing had a big impact on how she brought up her son. Akon’s Senegalese heritage inspired his musical taste as well as a variety of values and customs.
Senegalese rhythms and melodies are heavily incorporated into Akon’s musical approach. Additionally, he was raised by his extended family, who actively participated in his upbringing and instilled in him the value of family.
Tomeka was a strong supporter of her son’s love of music and pushed him to follow his artistic aspirations. She saw his potential and urged him to pursue it.
Blackburn claims that the artist’s current identity was influenced by a variety of factors, including her life experiences, cultural background, and familial beliefs.
The artist had some legal issues a few years ago that affected both his personal and professional life. The recurrent incidents damaged his reputation in the music business.
Akon and his former business partner, Devyne Stephens, who founded and owns UpFront Records and put Akon on the rise to stardom, got into a legal dispute.
Stephens claimed that Akon owed him money from a prior court settlement when he first filed a lawsuit against the artist in 2021 for almost $4 million. Then, when the case was still pending, he requested that all of Akon’s assets in New York be frozen.
He accused Akon of being dishonest, according to The Blast, but the singer said that Stephens was just acting out of retaliation and was trying to damage his reputation.
