Exclusive: Ethiopia will host the 2027 COP32 climate summit

Ethiopia said on Tuesday that it will host the 2027 United Nations COP32 climate summit, thwarting a rival attempt from Nigeria to secure a prominent position that would enable it to influence the event’s program and results.

But the more pressing decision over who will host COP31 next year is still up in the air, with Australia and Turkey competing.

In addition to setting goals for the summit and showcasing their own climate challenges, COP host countries take on the role of president, which gives them significant influence in resolving any disputes that may come up during discussions.

Reuters reported on Monday that Ethiopia revealed it had received support from several African countries to host the 2027 conference in its capital, Addis Ababa, during a plenary session of this year’s gathering in Brazil.

At the plenary session of the COP30 conference, Ethiopia’s ambassador to Brazil, Leulseged Tadese Abebe, stated, “We are deeply grateful for the trust and confidence bestowed on the Ethiopian people and government.”

“COP32 will play a major role in guiding climate action in this critical decade.”
COP summits are held in various parts of the world, and all participating nations must agree on the conclusion.

Official adoption of the decision is still required, but this is now regarded as a formality.

The Amazonian city of Belem is hosting this year’s conference. Australia and Turkey have been unable to agree on the hosting option for the “Western Europe and Others” group for months.

Among the most climate-vulnerable regions in the world, the Pacific Islands joined Australia in submitting a proposal for COP31.

On Monday, Western European nations were urged by Correa do Lago to find a quick solution to their impasse. The summit would take place in Bonn, Germany, the home of the U.N. climate agency, if it could not be settled.

“We would have to, but we do not want to,” Jochen Flasbarth, the German State Secretary for the Environment Ministry, told reporters.
