Cowboys Player Marshawn Kneeland’s Last Hours: Sending Farewell Text Before Passing Away
The 24-year-old defensive end was discovered dead a few days after he scored his first NFL touchdown following a police pursuit.
Reports that Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland had died from what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound devastated the sports world.
The 24-year-old was discovered this week in Frisco, Texas, close to his wrecked car, just days after celebrating his first NFL score and just hours after leading authorities on a pursuit.
New information has now surfaced that shows Kneeland sent his family a heartbreaking group text message saying goodbye prior to his passing.
PEOPLE was able to get police dispatch audio that shows the message caused a panic among law enforcement and his loved ones.
The recording shows a dispatcher saying, “They just got a text from him, a group text from him saying goodbye.” “They are worried about his well-being.”
According to officials, Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina, had been attempting to get in touch with him and had even done so via getting in touch with his agent, Jonathan Perzley.
According to the dispatcher, “she is armed and has a history of mental illness.” The statement she used was, “He will end it all.” Additionally, the NFL was informed that Kneeland had been sending texts to his family. One dispatcher said, “The NFL is calling Plano PD and the subject is texting his family goodbye?”
The chase started Wednesday night at approximately 10:33 p.m. when Texas DPS officers tried to stop him for a traffic infraction in Addison, according to the police.
Kneeland allegedly refused to stop, and after his car vanished from view, police found it crashed on the Dallas Parkway, close to the Cowboys’ stadium, a few hours later. Near the scene, authorities discovered his body at 1:31 a.m.
Kneeland was celebrating a significant occasion just days prior to the tragedy—scoring his first NFL score on Monday Night Football. The Michigan native was rapidly emerging as one of the Cowboys’ young, promising players after being selected by the organization in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
However, beneath his increasing fame, Kneeland had been dealing with a significant personal loss. In February 2024, his mother, Wendy Kneeland, died suddenly earlier this year.
The narrative is already heartbreaking, and the news of Kneeland’s last moments only makes it worse.
The young guy who carried more than most ever knew, as well as the son and teammate he was growing into, are now being remembered by many.
