Coach Erik Spoelstra’s home in Florida was devastated by a significant fire just hours after the game against Denver

Erik Spoelstra, the head coach of the Miami Heat, came home Thursday morning from an away game to discover his Coral Gables residence in fire.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called to a house fire at 4:30 a.m. The house was completely engulfed in flames by the time almost 20 rescue units arrived.

“When units arrived, they discovered a completely engulfed house that was on fire, with the roof partially collapsed,” stated Victoria Byrd, MDFR battalion chief. The fire was swiftly put out by units, but it still managed to take over most of the property. The fire is being investigated, and no fatalities or injuries have been recorded.

The previous evening, Spoelstra was coaching in Denver. Shortly after five in the morning, the Heat’s charter plane touched down in Miami, and he immediately went to the site. He was seen on camera, clearly frightened, strolling around the outside of the demolished house. Chris Quinn, the assistant coach, was also spotted coming to the location.

Byrd said that the fire was fierce and challenging to reach.

“To help combat this incident, we used multiple aerial apparatuses, fire engines, and rescues,” she stated. Access to the property was made even more difficult by a privacy wall and dense tree cover.

According to property records, Spoelstra bought the house with five bedrooms in December 2023. It has been undergoing significant renovations, according to neighbors, and a big party was just held, local press reported.

With two titles and a recent $120 million agreement, Spoelstra, 55, is among the NBA’s longest-tenured coaches. The fire did not damage any other residences.
