Trump supports Cuomo and says that if Mamdani wins, he would stop funding New York City

Republican U.S. President Donald Trump urged fans to support former Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday, saying he will limit federal funding for New York City if Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani wins the city’s mayoral elections on Tuesday.

Trump stated on Truth Social that it is “very unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required” if Mamdani wins the election.

According to polls, Mamdani is ahead of Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary.

Trump urged his fans to support Cuomo, saying that a vote for Sliwa would only benefit Mamdani.

“You truly don’t have an option, regardless of your personal opinion of Andrew Cuomo. “I hope he does a great job, and you have to vote for him,” Trump tweeted.

Throughout the campaign, Republicans have disparaged Mamdani’s candidacy, with Trump accusing the self-described democratic socialist of being a communist.

On June 24, Mamdani, a member of the state assembly who was born in Uganda, stunned political analysts by winning the primary with a landslide victory.

Mamdani’s ideas include boosting the company tax rate, freezing stabilized apartment rental rates, increasing publicly subsidized housing, and raising taxes on the wealthiest residents of New York City.

The national Democratic Party, which recognizes the need to win over young voters, faces both risks and rewards from Mamdani’s rise. The party is cautious of Republican attacks due to Mamdani’s Democratic socialism and his criticism of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, which has alarmed the finance community in New York.

Throughout his second term in office, Trump has threatened to cancel federal funding for diversity, equality, and inclusion programs, pro-Palestinian demonstrations against Israel’s war in Gaza, climate efforts, and transgender legislation.
