Nine People Are Injured in a Life-Threatening Train Stabbing in the UK
Nine passengers were badly hurt in the Doncaster-London train stabbing, and two people were arrested as police looked into the motivation.
A stabbing attack on a central England train on Saturday night left nine individuals with potentially fatal injuries, which Prime Minister Keir Starmer called “deeply concerning.” Huntingdon Station in Cambridgeshire experienced a massive emergency reaction after the incident on the Doncaster–London King’s Cross train.
Two persons were taken into custody following the attack, which British Transport Police (BTP) claimed was “a major incident.” The probe is being assisted by counterterrorism investigators, and authorities temporarily activated the national codeword for a “marauding terrorist attack,” “Plato,” before rescinding it. According to police, ten persons were hospitalized, nine of whom had serious injuries and one of them had minor ones. Deaths have not been reported.
At 7:42 p.m., officers were contacted in response to reports of several stabbings on the 18:25 LNER service between Doncaster and London King’s Cross. Two suspects were taken into custody when the train unexpectedly stopped at Huntingdon Station and armed cops boarded. Over 12 hours later, authorities still hadn’t disclosed any information on the perpetrators. John Healey, the British defense minister, told Sky News that the incident seemed to be a “isolated attack.”
As they escaped blood-soaked trains, passengers described tumultuous scenes. When Olly Foster, a train passenger, first heard people yelling, “run, run, there’s a guy literally stabbing everyone,” he assumed it was a Halloween hoax, he told the BBC. He stated, “Within minutes, people began pushing through the carriage, and I saw that my hand was covered in blood because the chair I had leaned on was covered in blood.” Passengers used jackets to try to stop the blood after an older man “blocked the attacker from stabbing a younger girl, leaving him with a gash on his head and neck,” Foster added.
“The only weapon we had against the assailant was a bottle of whiskey,” he added. As we looked down the carriage, we prayed he wouldn’t enter. Foster described the incident, saying, “Three people were bleeding severely.” There was blood flowing from the man’s stomach down his leg while he was gripping his stomach. He cried out, “Help, help, I was stabbed.”
Wren Chambers, a fellow traveler, stated that they became aware of the situation when “a man bolted down the carriage with a bloody arm, saying they’ve got a knife, run.” There was a significant amount of blood on the train, as well as on my bag and clothes, Chambers said on BBC Radio 5 Live. We knew the assailant was still on the train, so when the train stopped and people got off, the majority of them fled outside in an attempt to escape.
Before being arrested, the suspect was tasered, according to a witness who spoke to Sky News. When he started to wave a knife—quite a big one—they took him into custody. In the end, I believe a Taser was what brought him down,” he stated.
London Underground employee Dean McFarlane, who works at Huntingdon Station, reported witnessing people “running down the platform bleeding, with one man in a white shirt completely covered in blood.” “I grabbed people and told them to leave the station,” he stated, adding that he helped others experiencing panic attacks.
Chris Casey, Chief Superintendent of British Transport Police, called the incident “a shocking incident.” “We are making urgent inquiries to determine what has transpired, and it may be some time before we are able to confirm anything further,” he stated. Speculating on the incident’s causes at this early stage would be inappropriate.
Multiple air ambulances and critical care teams were deployed by emergency first responders. “We sent a lot of ambulances, our Hazardous Area Response Team, tactical commanders, and critical care teams,” the East of England Ambulance Service posted on X.
In a social media post, Prime Minister Starmer expressed gratitude to the emergency services for their response and said, “My thoughts are with all those affected.” Everyone nearby should heed the police’s recommendations.
In addition to expressing her “deep sadness to hear about the stabbings,” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood asked the public to refrain from speculating while the probe is ongoing.
Following the incident, the East Coast Main Line—which links London and Edinburgh—is severely disrupted. Passengers were cautioned by London North Eastern Railway (LNER) not to travel, stating: “We advise ‘Do Not Travel.'” Please postpone your trip as much as possible.
