23 People Are Killed by a Deadly Fire at a Mexican Discount Store During Day of the Dead Celebrations

A Mexican cheap store caught fire, resulting in at least 23 fatalities and 12 injuries.

At least 23 people were killed and 12 more were injured when a huge fire destroyed a bargain store in downtown Hermosillo on Saturday, turning a joyous weekend in northwest Mexico into a tragedy.

The fire started during Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations, when families get together to honor and commemorate departed loved ones.

Many of the victims most likely perished as a result of breathing in hazardous vapors, according to authorities. The attorney general of Sonora State, Gustavo Salas, attested that the forensic medical service determined that smoke inhalation, not burns, was the primary cause of death.

In a social media video statement, Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo declared, “I have ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to clarify the causes of the accident,” noting that children were among the victims.

“My heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum in her condolence statement regarding X. She went on to say that she had instructed federal support teams to help the injured and their relatives.

Rescue efforts were wide and quick. Ten ambulances and forty volunteers were sent to the scene by the Sonora Red Cross, which also made six hospital visits to transport wounded.

The now-extinguished fire started inside a Waldo’s, a well-known bargain store. Although the cause is still being investigated, first reports point to a potential electrical problem. The store was not attacked, according to city officials, who have ruled out foul play.

The citizens of Hermosillo are in mourning over the unexpected death during what should have been a weekend of celebration and memory as investigators search through the store’s burned remnants.
