Anthony Hopkins Remembers the Horrifying Sobriety Kickstarter Before Its 50th Anniversary: “I Awoke to Reality”
Anthony Hopkins had a startling realization that changed the course of his life!
The famous actor’s choice to live a better, cleaner lifestyle was not a coincidence—fortunately, he managed to escape—but the lesson had a long-lasting, beneficial effect.
The admission from Anthony Hopkins comes as he approaches his 50th year of abstinence from alcohol and encourages others to overcome their addiction.
Anthony Hopkins Talks About His Journey to Recovery Nearly 50 Years Into His Sober Life
In an interview with The New York Times podcast, “The Interview,” the award-winning actor revealed that he made the decision to permanently alter his life after almost being involved in an accident. In his own words:
“I realized that I could have murdered someone while driving intoxicated and in a blackout in California, with no idea where I was headed. or myself—something I didn’t give a damn about.”
When something clicked, he lamented with almost no regret how he could have put innocent families in risk that tragic night. Hopkins approached a previous agent for assistance after realizing he was completely lost at that very moment.
His new way of living was also endorsed by an inner voice that urged him to start living morally and to seek a path of atonement. The actor now felt compelled to consider his life a miracle, saying:
“Life presents terrible challenges. However, I wake up in the morning, thinking, ‘I’m still here,’ as I get closer to 88. “How?”
The Octogenarian emphasized the value of seeking assistance.
It truly took a community for Hopkins to receive assistance, he disclosed last year during his 49th sober anniversary. According to The Blast, Hopkins said he connected with a group of people who shared his fate and they all started the healing process.
“If you do have an issue, it’s okay to enjoy a drink and have fun. However, the media personality stressed that there is assistance available if you are struggling with alcohol.
He told those suffering from the illness that it is not as bad as people think and that alcohol allergies are the only thing that make it problematic.
To get past that, there is still a lot of assistance accessible. Above all, Hopkins stressed that there are thousands of others in his situation, thus no illness is unique.
In 2020, Anthony Hopkins reached the 45-year mark in his sobriety.
For the actor, 50 years is definitely a long time coming! He accomplished the remarkable feat of abstaining from alcohol for 45 years during the pandemic.
As per usual, he took to social media to explain how his sobriety journey started and how that brave choice has really helped him. He remembered that he was on the verge of death from excessive drinking until he came to a pivotal point where he had to decide whether to live or die.
Hopkins concluded his remarks as usual with a forceful appeal for young people to have hope, telling them that there is always a route out of the suffering caused by alcoholism.
The actor and Martha Stewart’s romance ended because of a film role.
Stewart and Hopkins were the sexiest couple in Hollywood prior to discovering her true love, but their relationship soured after Hopkins’s award-winning performance as “Hannibal Lecter” in “The Silence of the Lambs.”
According to The Blast, Stewart jokingly admitted that she broke up with the actor because she couldn’t stand the graphic behavior of his character in the film.
She went on to say that the connection was made more difficult by the fact that she could not bear to take Hopkins to her large, eerie home in a Maine woodland for fear of being eaten by him.
“Do you want someone eating your brain while you are sitting in your beautiful dining room?” She would have had a fantastic relationship with the actor, Stewart said in the interview, but that ship has sailed since the 1990s.
Anthony Hopkins is a contented spouse.
