Trump Indicates He Is Open To Meeting Kim Jong Un During His Next Trip To Asia
Trump says that while he is in Asia for regional summits, he would like to meet Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea.
President Donald Trump of the United States has indicated that he would like to see Kim Jong Un of North Korea when he travels to Asia in the near future. Trump told reporters on Air Force One, “I would like to. He said that he “had a great relationship” with Kim and that he’s “open to it if you want to spread the word.”
Trump shook hands with Kim in 2019, making history as the first sitting US president to visit North Korea during his first term. The two did not reach a formal agreement after meeting three times during Trump’s presidency to discuss denuclearization. North Korea has since tested its intercontinental missiles several times.
Trump will visit Malaysia and Japan as part of his Asia trip, where he will meet with a number of world leaders, including Xi Jinping of China, as part of ongoing trade talks related to Trump’s recent tariffs.
“I think they are sort of a nuclear power, They got a lot of nuclear weapons, I’ll say that,” Trump responded when asked if he would recognize North Korea as a nuclear nation.
In addition, North Korean leader Kim has shown interest in a future summit as long as the United States halts what he describes as the “absurd” demand for denuclearization. “I still remember President Trump well,” Kim stated in a recent statement to the official media.
Chung Dong-young, the minister of unification for South Korea, stated that there is a “considerable” possibility that Trump and Kim may meet during the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum in South Korea. However, a senior US official revealed that Trump has not yet scheduled such a meeting.
Trump will proceed to Busan, South Korea, to attend the APEC gathering after beginning his journey in Malaysia for the ASEAN summit. There, he is anticipated to meet with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who has expressed interest in a Trump-Kim meeting and possible peace negotiations on the Korean peninsula.
During his trip to Asia, Trump will also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding trade and rare earth minerals, which are necessary for the production of electronics. The truce is in jeopardy because Trump has threatened to impose a 100% penalty on Chinese goods due to export limitations, even though both countries have temporarily suspended proposed duties.
The president’s journey to Asia highlights the US’s continued involvement in regional trade and security issues while paving the way for a possible, highly consequential meeting with Kim Jong Un.
