Morocco intends to phase out coal use by 2040
The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) said on Thursday that Morocco plans to get rid of all coal power by 2040 if it can get foreign climate finance.
In order to move natural gas and renewable energy projects forward, Morocco joined the international PPCA in 2023. The PPCA is a group of about 60 countries working to get rid of coal power.
The PPCA said in a statement that Morocco would still try to get rid of coal by the 2040s even if other countries didn’t help.
Official numbers show that coal made up 59.3% of Morocco’s energy mix in 2024, down from 70% in 2022. By 2030, Morocco wants 52% of its total capacity to come from renewable sources, up from 45% now.
“Morocco has stopped planning for new coal power plants,” the PPCA statement reported Morocco’s energy minister as saying.
The promise to phase out “signals intent to manage early plant retirements, contractual reforms, and a just transition backed by accessible international climate finance,” said Rachid Ennassiri, head of the independent climate think tank Imal.
