EU will stop importing any Russian gas by January 2028

EU energy ministers have agreed to a plan to stop importing gas and oil from Russia over time. This is meant to cut Moscow’s war profits.

As part of efforts to cut down on Moscow’s use of energy money to pay for its war in Ukraine, the European Union has decided to gradually stop importing any gas from Russia by January 1, 2028.

The plan was approved by EU energy ministers meeting in Luxembourg on Monday. It sets a clear timeline for cutting off Russian energy supplies.

The Council of the European Union says that the plan will stop Russian gas imports under new contracts in January 2026. Short-term contracts that are already in place will end in June 2026. After that, all long-term contracts will end in January 2028.

The group said that the move shows how determined it is to become less reliant on Russian energy and improve Europe’s energy security, even though the war in Ukraine is still causing problems.
