Morocco plans to increase expenditure on education and health to $15 billion by 2026
Health and education will get 140 billion dirhams ($15 billion) in Morocco’s 2026 budget, which is 16% more than last year, the royal house said in a statement on Sunday.
One of the main things that young people who protested across Morocco in the past few weeks wanted was better health and education services. The money that would be spent on these two areas would be about 10% of Morocco’s GDP. Following a meeting led by King Mohammed VI, the royal palace said in a statement that Morocco’s economy will grow by 4.8% this year, up from 3.8% in 2024. This is due to strong internal demand and the performance of the non-farming sector.
After the finance minister presents the 2026 draft budget to parliament next week, it will be talked about in more depth. It includes more money to reduce differences between regions.
In other news, the council approved two draft laws before the next general election. These laws include steps to encourage women and young people to vote and to stop corruption, such as not letting candidates who have been convicted of a crime or violation run.
The plans would make it easier for people under 35 to run for office and give them money to cover 75% of their campaign costs.
