Prince Andrew of the UK renounces his royal titles due to allegations of sexual assault

Prince Andrew has said that he would no longer utilize his royal title or the honors that have been bestowed upon him, which is a momentous announcement for the British monarchy.

The decision was made after talks with King Charles III, his immediate family, and the larger royal circle, according to the Duke of York, who is still seventh in line for the throne. He concluded that the ongoing controversy around him had become a distraction from the duties of the Royal Family.

“We have determined that the ongoing accusations against me divert attention from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family after consulting with the King and my immediate and extended family,” the statement from Buckingham Palace stated. “As always, I have made the decision to prioritize my responsibilities to my family and my nation.”

In his statement, Prince Andrew reiterated his 2020 decision to withdraw from public life in the wake of sexual abuse claims connected to his friendship with the late, infamous businessman Jeffrey Epstein. Even though he has “vigorously” and repeatedly disputed the charges, the scandal’s shadow has remained, harming his reputation and preventing him from taking part in royal duties.

For example, Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s most well-known accusers, stated that after being trafficked by Epstein, she was sexually abused by Prince Andrew three times. According to reports, the prince has vehemently rejected all of the accusations made against him and, in 2022, he and her came to an out-of-court settlement that included neither an apology nor an acknowledgment of fault.
