Mexico’s heavy rains kill almost 30 people
Authorities in Mexico said on Friday that heavy rains have killed at least 27 people and left more missing. The rains caused floods, cut power to some towns, and ruptured rivers.
At least 16 people died, and at least 1,000 homes and hundreds of schools were damaged, according to the state of Hidalgo’s civil protection officials.
Alejandro Armenta, the governor of Puebla state, said that at least nine people had died in terrible accidents like floods and that five more were missing. Two more people died in Veracruz state, according to the authorities.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said in a post on X that they were trying to help the people, open the roads, and get the power back on. It was knee-deep in water as she showed pictures of first responders bringing supplies through the streets.
Heavy rains and river flooding in Poza Rica put much of Veracruz town under water. A Navy video showed an officer looking for people who were stuck as he walked down a street that was up to his neck in water.
Over 5,400 people were sent by the ministry of defense to help watch over, evacuate, and clean up places that had been damaged.
