Taiwan President Lai says Trump should get the Nobel Peace Prize if he can get the Chinese president to stop using force against Taiwan
Lai, the president of Taiwan, said that Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize if he can get the president of China to stop using force against Taiwan.
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te said that US President Donald Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize if he can get Chinese President Xi Jinping to stop using armed force against Taiwan for good.
Lai said on The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, a conservative US radio show that airs on more than 400 stations, that he hoped Trump would continue to back Taiwan even though things are getting worse between Taiwan and China.
“We hope to keep getting support from President Trump.” She said, “President Trump would definitely win the Nobel Peace Prize if he could convince Xi Jinping to stop all military aggression against Taiwan for good.”
Trump is set to meet Xi later this month at a meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders in South Korea, where he made the statement. Lai brought up Trump’s earlier comments from August, in which he said that Xi had told him that China would not attack Taiwan while he was president.
The US doesn’t have official diplomatic ties with Taiwan, but it is still the island’s most important overseas partner and source of arms. Since Trump took office, however, there have been no new plans to sell weapons to Taiwan.
When asked what advice he would give Trump if they met, Lai said he would tell him to be careful about Xi’s nuclear plans. A transcript from Lai’s speech released by Taiwan’s presidential office on Tuesday says that he told him to pay close attention to the fact that Xi Jinping is not only holding bigger military drills in the Taiwan Strait but also putting more troops in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.
Trump has said many times that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, just like four of his predecessors. Lai’s comments could help Trump’s international standing before the news of this year’s winner in Norway on Friday.
