Southern India’s Stampede at a Political Rally Takes 39 Lives

A stampede during a political gathering in Tamil Nadu, southern India, has claimed the lives of at least 39 persons, including children.

Officials announced on Saturday that a crowd crush at a political gathering in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu had killed at least 39 people, including nine children. Tens of thousands of people were present at a campaign gathering for actor-turned-politician Vijay in the Karur district when the incident happened.

People fainted as the crowded crowd surged, according to television footage. Nine children, 13 adults, and 17 women were among the fatalities, according to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who visited the area. 51 people were hurt, he noted, and they are being treated in the hospital right now.

In addition to promising a thorough investigation into the tragedy, the Chief Minister announced a compensation package worth one million rupees ($11,300; £8,400) for each victim’s family.

Some families experience unfathomable grief. According to a man who was waiting outside a hospital, “My brother’s two kids were there,” ANI said. Two boys. The younger one is missing, and the older one died. ICU is where my sister-in-law is currently. What ought I to do?

In an online posting, Vijay said, “My heart is broken,” expressing his anguish. I am experiencing terrible, excruciating pain and sadness. He prayed for a quick recovery for those in the hospital and sent his sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased.

In a response, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on X (previously Twitter) that the event was “unfortunate” and “deeply saddening.”

In India, deadly crowd crushes are still a common occurrence, frequently during sporting events, religious festivals, and political gatherings. This year, similar catastrophes have already happened, such as outside a cricket stadium and during the Hindu festival of Kumbh Mela.

Authorities have promised to move quickly to identify the cause of the Karur catastrophe and put policies in place to stop similar tragic events in the future.
