South Africa’s DA names former leader Zille as candidate for Johannesburg mayor
The Democratic Alliance of South Africa said on Saturday that former leader Helen Zille would be its next contender for Johannesburg’s mayorship. The party hopes to regain control of the nation’s largest city in the local government election that takes place next year.
Many people considered the 74-year-old to be the primary planner of the party’s electoral strategy during the national election last year, when the ruling African National Congress lost its majority for the first time, forcing it to share power with DA in second place and other minor parties.
The DA has selected Zille as a political heavyweight in an attempt to retake South Africa’s commercial capital after a string of mayors in the last ten or so years have either resigned, been ousted, or, in the case of three of them, passed away while in office.
Through the nomination of an experienced political person, the party hopes to duplicate its success in managing Cape Town, Johannesburg’s economic rival that is frequently commended for its superior service delivery, and to represent stability and competence.
“DA vs. ANC will not be the next local government election. In the Soweto township, DA leader John Steenhuisen told supporters, “It is a choice between decay and renewal.” “Where the DA governs outright, we deliver.”
Zille pledged to improve the delivery of water, electricity, road repair, and trash services in her speech accepting her nomination.
“The taps in Johannesburg will not remain dry. “We refuse to embrace brokenness as the new normal,” she declared. Our city will be reclaimed from a criminal mafia by force. I feel your anguish as you go down those bumpy roads in the dark, when each broken streetlight is a shattered promise.
In recent years, Johannesburg has been run by a number of coalitions because no party has a majority in the city council. In 2022, the DA was last elected mayor of the city.
