Harvard Wins in Court After Overturning a $2 Billion Funding Freeze
A judge declares that Trump’s reductions in Harvard funding were unlawful.
A federal judge this week declared that the Trump administration unlawfully stopped more than $2 billion in research funding, giving Harvard University a significant legal win.
Following Harvard’s resistance to demands from Trump’s administration to restructure its governance and programs, the cuts were implemented. The court agreed with the school’s argument that the action was political punishment rather than policy.
The funding freeze was declared unconstitutional by Judge Allison D. Burroughs, who described the conduct as an obvious attempt to use power to retaliate against the university. She added that the administration’s accusations of antisemitism were being exploited as an excuse to cut funding.
In addition to giving Harvard’s research programs back billions of dollars, the decision emphasizes that even the nation’s most powerful offices cannot compel colleges to comply with their demands by severing funding.
The government and Harvard have previously battled. The court previously blocked a previous attempt to limit enrollment of international students.
For the time being, the oldest university in the country wins handily, while Trump suffers yet another well-publicized legal setback.
