A Russian national is accused of plotting to attack the Israeli embassy in Germany
A Russian individual has been indicted by German prosecutors in connection with an alleged conspiracy to attack the Israeli embassy in Berlin.
A Russian individual has been accused by German authorities of trying to join the extremist organization Islamic State (IS) and organizing a terrorist attack against the Israeli embassy in Berlin.
According to German privacy rules, the suspect, who goes by Akhmad E., allegedly started planning an attack in early February. According to the prosecution, he attempted to make explosives by following online instructions, but his plans fell through when he couldn’t get the required parts.
Federal prosecutors claim that the accused was detained in February at the Berlin airport while reportedly getting ready to go to Pakistan for IS combat training. Investigators think he sold pricey smartphones that he had obtained through phony mobile phone contracts in order to pay for the trip.
Authorities accuse him of translating Islamic State propaganda into Russian and Chechen in order to aid the group’s recruitment and radicalization activities, in addition to the suspected attack plot.
He was officially charged by authorities on August 7 with planning and instigating a major act of violence that would imperil the state. He is also accused of trying to join a foreign terrorist organization while still a minor.
As the investigation continues, the suspect is still being held.
