Dominion to Receive $67 Million from Newsmax as Settlement for 2020 Election Coverage
A conservative media organization has secured a multimillion-dollar agreement following the dissemination of inaccurate information regarding voting machines.
Newsmax, the conservative cable channel that gained prominence for amplifying Trump’s unfounded claims regarding the 2020 election, has consented to pay Dominion Voting Systems $67 million to resolve a defamation lawsuit.
In 2021, Dominion initiated legal proceedings against Newsmax, alleging that the network disseminated false narratives claiming that its machines were manipulated to disadvantage Trump and benefit Joe Biden. A judge in Delaware has already determined that the statements were defamatory, paving the way for a trial. Rather than engaging in a courtroom confrontation, the network opted for a settlement.
The payment for the agreement will be made in installments over the next three years, as reported by Newsmax, which indicates that the funds will be sourced from revenue. Even with the settlement in place, the network stood by its coverage, describing it as “fair and balanced.”
Newsmax, a lesser-known conservative media outlet, gained popularity within Trump’s circle following the 2020 election as it strongly embraced his assertions of extensive fraud and doubts regarding the pandemic. The loyalty has elevated its profile, yet it is currently costing the channel tens of millions.
