In Malakal, Upper Nile State, on Monday, August 18, the freshly deployed Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) contingent (Rwanbatt-2) was welcomed by Maj Gen Nakul Rayamajhi, Sector North Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
When the Sector Commander arrived, the Rwanbatt-2 Contingent Commander, Lt Col Robert Rwagihungu, gave him a thorough briefing on the troops’ deployment strategy and operational readiness.
Rwanbatt-2’s departure was praised by the Sector Commander for their professionalism and commitment to peacekeeping. He called on the new hires to maintain the highest standards of training and discipline in order to fulfill their goal of defending people, assisting with humanitarian aid, and fostering enduring peace in South Sudan.
The necessity for cooperation, attentiveness, and dedication was emphasized as he reminded the peacekeepers that their actions and performance in the mission area affect not only the RDF but the UN in general.
Now that Rwanbatt-2 has taken up all of its responsibilities in Sector North, Rwanda is continuing to make a significant contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.
Rwanda contributed more troops to UN missions than any other country, second only to Nepal, as of May 2025. More than 1,000 Rwandan police officers are among the 5,880 uniformed people assigned to different duties.
