Trump says the answer to ending the war in Ukraine is a lasting peace agreement rather than a ceasefire
Trump opposes brittle ceasefires during summit discussions in Alaska and claims that a permanent peace agreement is the only option to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
Temporary ceasefires “often times do not hold up,” according to Donald Trump, who has stated that the only way to stop the conflict in Ukraine is to negotiate a permanent peace agreement.
While traveling to Alaska to meet with Vladimir Putin, the former US president told reporters that he would not be pleased if he departed without negotiating a ceasefire. “Ceasefires often do not hold up,” he said on social media after the fact. A long-term peace deal must be negotiated.
BBC Ukraine reporter James Waterhouse said the change in strategy is a setback for Kyiv and its European partners, who had called for an immediate ceasefire as one of their main objectives.
Many Ukrainians were incensed at the hospitable greeting for the Russian leader in Kyiv. “We are devastated by Trump’s lavish welcome for Putin,” a local resident stated.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared he will meet with Trump in Washington, DC, on Monday.
The conference in Alaska did not result in an agreement. Trump maintained that “progress was made,” while Putin declared his “sincere interest” in bringing the conflict to a close.
