Trump will host a ceremony at the White House where Azerbaijan and Armenia will sign a peace agreement
Trump will mediate deals on a number of sectors as Armenia and Azerbaijan sign a peace agreement at the White House on Friday.
With US President Donald Trump hosting the leaders of both countries at a formal signing ceremony, the White House has confirmed that Armenia and Azerbaijan will sign a long-awaited peace deal.
In attempts to put an end to decades of hostilities between the two South Caucasus countries—which have clashed frequently over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region—the statement represents a significant turning point.
“Armenia is not the only issue here. The issue is not limited to Azerbaijan. According to a top administration source, it concerns the entire region.
“And they are aware that under President Trump, that area is renowned for being safer and more prosperous.”
Although the details of the accord have not yet been made public, the peace deal follows months of private diplomacy spearheaded by Trump and his team.
Trump will also sign separate bilateral agreements with Azerbaijan and Armenia, according to White House spokesperson Anna Kelly. Although no additional information was given, it was reported that the agreements will address trade, infrastructure, border security, economic cooperation, energy, and technology.
It is anticipated that the signing ceremony will be a landmark in US foreign policy and a major diplomatic victory for Trump, who has been presenting himself as a world mediator in the midst of his ongoing political endeavors.
