Mwangi, a rights activist, is arrested by Kenyan authorities for his involvement in fatal protests

Prominent human rights advocate Boniface Mwangi has been arrested by Kenyan police, who stated on Sunday that they will arraign him on Monday on charges of aiding “terrorist acts” connected to last month’s fatal anti-government demonstrations.

Detectives detained Mwangi at his Machakos County residence on Saturday, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on X. They also found “two unused tear gas canisters and one 7.62mm blank round” in addition to two cell phones, a laptop, and notebooks.

According to the X article, Mwangi is scheduled to be arraigned for illegally possessing ammunition in addition to the terrorism allegations.

It was not immediately possible to get in touch with a Mwangi representative for comment.

Following the death of political blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody last month, hundreds of Kenyans flocked to the streets, launching a protest movement fueled by resentment over the high cost of living and what campaigners claim is police corruption and violence.

The June 25 protests that DCI mentioned in its tweet about Mwangi claimed the lives of 19 people, according to the government-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. According to the committee, when protests erupted once more on July 7, another 31 individuals lost their lives.

Most of the demonstrators are young adults who use social media to organize because they are in dire need of work.

Renowned campaigner Mwangi previously ran for parliament on a platform against corruption.

After traveling to neighboring Tanzania to see a hearing in a treason case against incarcerated opposition leader Tundu Lissu, he was arrested and deported in May.

He later claimed that he had been sexually abused by Tanzanian security officers while he was being held, and he filed a complaint against them at the East African Court of Justice on Friday.
