Rwanda calls the recent agreement between the DR Congo, AFC, and M23 “a significant step towards peace”

In Doha, Qatar, the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the AFC/M23 rebels signed the Declaration of Principles for a peace accord on Saturday, July 19. The Rwandan government hailed this development “in support of a pathway to a comprehensive peace agreement, facilitated by the State of Qatar.”

According to the ministry of foreign affairs, “today’s declaration in Doha is a significant step forward towards the peaceful resolution” of the conflict in eastern DR Congo, “by addressing the root causes of the conflict and restoring security and stability in our region,” in light of the June 27 peace agreement between Rwanda and DR Congo signed in Washington, DC, and the work of Africa-led initiatives.

The government of Rwanda further notes: “The State of Qatar’s pivotal mediation role, supported by the U.S. government, builds on the African Union’s efforts and the joint EAC/SADC initiatives, and has contributed to the milestone achieved today in Doha.” We must all be in favor of continuing the progress until it is finished.

“Rwanda remains committed to supporting both economic development and sustainable peace in the Great Lakes region.”
