Tinubu: We Will Never Forget Buhari’s Silent Bravery, Moral Principles, and Incorruptibility
“Buhari was a good, honorable, decent man; his unwavering standards and moral code will never be forgotten.” According to Tinubu,
The late former president Muhammadu Buhari was praised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who called him “a good man, a decent man, an honorable man” whose moral compass and incorruptibility distinguished him as a national leader.
Tinubu called the late former president a “unfailingly tender, loyal, and good man” during a special meeting of the Federal Executive Council on Thursday in Abuja.
Tinubu described the late Buhari as “respectful and unpretentious to his peers.” He showed kindness without arrogance to those who sat beneath him. And he was consistently kind, devoted, and good to those he loved the most. His life served as both an homage to virtue and a condemnation to immorality. The discipline and integrity of his public service were illuminated by the purity of his private character. He retained the calmness that characterized him in life, even in death. Not a moan or a sigh, but a silent surrender to God’s will. Nigeria lost a man like that. That was the man our country today honors.
“President Buhari had an ascetic, honorable life. He remained erect at all times, unaffected by the lure of authority, unaffected by praise, and terrified of the isolation that frequently befalls individuals who uphold moral principles. His was a quiet courage, a righteousness that never made an announcement, instead of what is fashionable.
“In a time when men had lost hope that change was possible, Muhammadu Buhari put his faith in the people of his country,” Tinubu added, reflecting on the resilience of Buhari’s spirit and his influence on Nigeria’s democracy.
Together, he and I stood with people from various political backgrounds, including towns and regions. Through our partnership, Nigeria was able to witness the first genuine democratic handover of power from one ruling party to another.
“He led with dignity, exercised restraint, and accepted the responsibility of leadership without protesting when he was sworn in as our party’s first elected president.”
“When his tenure ended, he returned to Daura, not to command from the shadowed or to hold court, but to live as he always had, never seeking to impose his will, but content to let others carry the nation forward,” Tinubu said, demonstrating that Buhari’s humility persisted even after he left office.
“President Buhari was not a perfect man,” he continued, urging Nigerians to follow in his footsteps. There isn’t a leader. However, he was a good man, a decent man, and an honorable man in every way. Like many legacies, his record will be contested, but what he brought to public life—the moral code he upheld, the unwavering standard he presented—will go on. He had a strong desire to serve Nigeria while remaining faithful to God. He’s sleeping now. And those of us who remain must use the memory of life as a benchmark to guide us; let us honor him not merely with words but also with bravery in the pursuit of justice, humility in authority, discipline in service, and compassion in governance.
