Kenyatta and Kagame spoke about DR Congo’s peace initiatives
Uhuru Kenyatta, the former president of Kenya, met with President Paul Kagame on Friday, July 11, to discuss the ongoing African-led efforts to bring peace back to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“They discussed the ongoing efforts to address the root causes of the conflict and achieve lasting peace in Eastern DRC,” Village Urugwiro wrote in a post on X.
Among the five facilitators of the EAC-SADC peace process is Kenyatta. Olusegun Obasanjo, a former Nigerian president who is also on the facilitators’ panel, visited just over two weeks before to his meeting with Kagame.
Rwanda and DR Congo inked a peace deal on June 27 after US-mediated talks, which has accelerated efforts to bring peace back to eastern DR Congo.
Initiatives for peace in DR Congo led by Africans have been incorporated into the US-brokered deal.
The FDLR, a genocidal force established by former members of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, would be neutralized as part of the Rwanda-DR Congo deal, which also calls for the removal of Rwanda’s defensive measures.
