The Rwanda-DR Congo peace agreement is welcomed by the UN Security Council

The peace deal negotiated between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 27 in Washington, D.C., was praised by the Security Council on Wednesday, July 9.

President Donald Trump of the United States has stated that he anticipates meeting with the presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the “next couple of weeks” at the White House.

Members of the Security Council praised the peace agreement in a press release and conveyed their gratitude to the African Union, Qatar, and the United States for their facilitation efforts.

According to the statement, “the Security Council members expressed their determination to actively support the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda in the implementation and follow-up of this agreement.”

The council members called on the two nations to sincerely fulfill their duties and pledges in order to bring about enduring peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

On July 4, President Paul Kagame praised the United States’ efforts to support negotiations between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and broker an agreement that calls for the removal of Rwanda’s defensive measures and the neutralization of the FDLR, a genocidal militia established by former members of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Rwanda is dedicated to carrying out the agreement, according to Kagame, just as DR Congo will uphold its end of the bargain.
