According to the EMSC, the earthquake struck at a depth of 104 kilometers (64.62 miles). Information on possible casualties or damage was not immediately available.
Because of the region’s tectonic activity, Chile, which is situated along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, regularly experiences earthquakes. The situation is being watched by authorities for any new developments.
