Recalling her attempt to use a drive-through ATM to deposit her first $1 million tennis winnings, Serena Williams
The retired tennis pro recalled on “Hot Ones” that “the guy [at the bank] was like, ‘Uh, I think you need to come inside for this.”
Early in her career, Serena Williams picked up a valuable banking lesson.
When the 42-year-old tennis champion made an appearance on the most recent episode of Hot Ones, she talked about her experience trying to use a drive-through ATM to deposit her first $1 million in tennis winnings.
Williams stated, “I never played for money,” in response to host Sean Evans’ inquiry about the veracity of her account. I participated in the sport because I was passionate about it. I’m not even sure if my goal was to win or to play to the best.”
I would respond, “Oh, I didn’t get that one in Zurich,’ or, ‘Oh, I forgot that one in Moscow,'” to my tax person when he asked if I had received my money. My only goal in playing was to win; I wasn’t thinking if I didn’t succeed. “I was so furious that I wanted to figure out how to improve and prevail the next time,” she went on.
Williams then recalled her first big pay day, stating, “I never really spent a lot of money,” and, “I went through the drive-thru… and the guy was like, ‘Uh, I think you need to come inside for this,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, OK.'”
Retiring from tennis in September 2022, Williams is married to Alexis Ohanian and they have two daughters, Adira, who is 10 months old, and Olympia, who is 6½.
During an interview with PEOPLE at the Tribeca Film Festival, Serena Williams discussed her life as a mother and how she manages to indulge her competitive spirit while discussing the launch of her new docuseries In the Arena: Serena Williams last month.
“Neither I nor you can. Mommy has to be the finest, she declared. “I am required to attend all of Olympia’s events at her school. I actually do show up.
Williams went on to say that she gets her motivation from her cosmetics brand Wyn, saying, “I invest in women.” It’s highly competitive when it comes to investing in individuals of color.
